Read this BEFORE you quit your calling...
One of my favorite things to do when I’m feeling stuck or stagnant in my work is to look back at where my personal heroes started.
I love going and looking at a blogger’s first post or video, scrolling the archives of an Instagram sensation, and reading the autobiographies of incredible people.
Of course it’s fun to see how janky and clunky it all was at the beginning, but it’s also fascinating to see how they have honed and refined their voice, brand, and mission over time.
It’s easy to look at, say, Marie Forleo and assume that she’s always had it all figured out. Here’s an image of her first MarieTV video followed by her most recent one. She’s been at this for over 10 years and is still consistently changing and improving.
I think we’ve all gone down the ‘they just had better luck / more money / more opportunities / more connections than me’ rabbit hole. But the truth is that they CREATED that luck/money/opportunity/connection by continuing to show up day after day, year after year. Marie went a full year before her weekly videos began to gain any traction at all. All the while she was working as a bartender at night and hustling on her business during the day.
Persistence and consistency pay greater dividends than luck ever will. Plus, it’s something any one of us can cultivate.
I am no exception to this. I have stopped and started and quit and failed more times than I can count. I’m so familiar with the but it’s not perfect yet storyline it’s almost comical.
But what I’ve learned is this: I can do it. You can do it. We just have to DECIDE that we’re going to continue on even when, especially when, we most want to give up. Even when, especially when, it feels like no one cares at all.
So, if you’re at the point of throwing your hands in the air and giving up, I hope you know that there is at least one other person (this girl) out there rooting for you to keep it up 💪
You got this.
