How to ACTUALLY get something done today

How to ACTUALLY get something done today

As a bootstrapping solopreneur, I spend a LOT of time either working alone or working alongside strangers at a coffee shop. Basically, no one cares if I meet my goals or check off things from my to-do list. I have been seduced by the ‘eh, not really feeling it today’ fairy and, worse, the ‘I’m so overwhelmed, I don’t know where to start, so I’m just going to surf the day away on Facebook’ fairy. I’ve had so many of these days that sometimes it makes me sick to look back on the days, weeks, months of unproductivity (not a word but let’s run with it).

And here’s another thing: I only have about 4 sit-behind-my-computer hours in me per day. Sure, I can sit behind a computer all damn day but I’m only going to spend about 4 of those hours actually producing.

So, what’s a stir-crazy, DIY, solopreneur to do?

I’m thrilled to introduce you to the 45 minute ‘work sprint’.

My fellow solopreneur friend Galen (of awesome company Courage Club) and I came up with this during yet another afternoon of good intentions and less than stellar output.

It’s very simple which is great because ya’ll are BUSY AF.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Take a look at your goals for the day

  2. Choose one task to focus on for your first ‘sprint’

  3. Set your timer for 45 minutes (I love this Enso meditation timer, it has a soothing ‘ding’ when the time starts and ends)

  4. Once you hear the ‘ding’ you are ONLY ALLOWED TO FOCUS ON THAT ONE TASK. So, you might as well knock it out of the park

  5. Once the 45 minutes is up, you’ll hear the final ‘ding’ and you can step away from the task

  6. Take a 15 minute break (stand up, make tea, get outside, call your mom, kiss your cat, eat a snack, do some stretches)

  7. After 15 minutes is up, sit back down, choose a new task, and dive into your next 45 minute sprint!

I’m serious. This has helped me get so much more done than the days when I would plan to ‘work’ from 9-12 and end up sitting there and getting little bits of 10 things done. Plus, if one of your ‘sprints’ doesn’t bear the fruit you were hoping for, it doesn’t have to ruin your whole day! You can just take 15, shake it off, and get back at it.

Trust me. It works.
